On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that the Centre will support the development of COVID-19 vaccines in a review meeting. He also appreciated the efforts by Indian developers and manufacturers in this undertaking. India will provide cost-effective, easily accessible and solutions for testing along with the vaccines and medication not only for India but for the whole world.

People who are aware of the matter told ET that the principal scientific advisor had made a presentation on the research and development which is underway on COVID-19. The PM also took the stock of the health ministry’s distribution and delivery mechanism available for vaccines. Health minister Harsh Vardhan, along with Niti Aayog member for health VK Paul, attended the meeting. Also, top officials from the health, technology and science along with biotechnology departments and other several senior scientists and officials attended the meeting.

Modi said in a statement that regulatory modification is a dynamic process. Experts in every emerging domain should be used by the regulator properly with new approaches emerging. For upcoming delivery of vaccines, he reviewed the mechanisms for sufficient procurement and technologies for bulk-stockpiling. This is done with filling vials for distribution and ensuring effective delivery. He said that serological surveys and testing should be scaled up and regular, speedy and inexpensive testing should be made available at the earliest.

He further stressed on the necessity for continuous and rigorous scientific testing and authentication of traditional medicine treatments. He also appreciated the efforts of the Ayush ministry in directing evidence-based research and providing consistent solutions.

The Prime Minister said that caution should be observed against the COVID-19 pandemic. The health minister informed recently that 200 million to 250 million Indians will get vaccinated against COVID-19 by July 2021.
